Welcome!

Welcome to our blog. This blog isn't just made for fun, it is actually on of our school's biggest projects, a portfolio! This portfolio is only for our History class in Secondary at Springfield International School.  Each class is divided into teams and have scribes to lead them.

In our History class, we learn about HOTS and LOTS, which mean higher order and lower order thinking skills. Also, we don't just memorise History, we learn to think critically. Our Facilitator, not Teacher, Mr. Rick divides us into groups and we are teaching each other. He only gives us a few lecture notes compared to the whole Internet. As our semester past by, we create and design a blog for each team.

Here is the table of Contents:

Thank you for visiting our blog.

Week 18 Day 2

Week 18 Day 2

Today, we have a test. It is a computer based test and the day we submit this blog, so se wont be able to post anything again. And bye.

Week 18 Day 1

Week 18 Day 1

Today, Mr Rick came late again to class and got an infraction, and got another IOU from treasurer last time. He told us that the blog was due on Friday. And I think there are groups that haven't finished it, including our group. And maybe Mr Rick already got 3 IOUs by now *WoW*
There were lots of discussion today, because we need to grill each other *lol* and answer the question each team member ask us. For the whole period, we were just grilling each other about the reviews of our topics.

Week 17 Day 2

Week 17 Day 2

Today, Mr Rick came late to class, so he need to pay to the pizza box. At the start of the class, Mr Rick ask us to grill each other,.........grill each other by testing each other. We questioned each other using the revision document.

Week 17 Day 1

Week 17 Day 1

Today, Mr Rick didn't come to school, so we have a substitute teacher. We thought we were going to have tech time for the whole period, but there's a substitute teacher went in the class just when most of us think that. We were asked by the teacher to download the document in Schoology and answer the questions. There are 15 question in the revision. One of our group members are asked to to the question about Napoleon. When she do it, there is a question with the word Napoleon Ice Cream -_-". Okay, so it was change into some joke? Ok, whatever. Then we research about it and found out that it has another name "Neapolitan ice cream".

Week 16 Day 2

Week 16 Day 2

Today we have History Test -_-". We have the test written and it is based on Cambridge. This is actually for Secondary 8 students but we managed to do it. It tooks up about 1 whole hour to do the test, which have 3 questions.

Week 16 Day 1

Week 16 Day 1

Today, we practiced about framing a describe question. We need to do a three paragraph writing of the describe question. Today, Mr Rick didn't come late to class. He showed us tips on how to do a describe question. After that, he ask us to answer his describe question, which is 'Describe the motives for the use of guillotine.'
After we are done with our describe question, we exchange it with echo team.

Week 15 Day 2

Week 15 Day 2

Today, we have field trip. So we don't have history class. It was boring the first time we reached that place. We also need to watch at IMAX but we waited for 30 minutes then the system broke down, so wasted our time for nothing.

Week 15 Day 1

Week 15 Day 1

Today we practice on how to write answers for describe questions. This practice is for the test next week. We have 2 parts for exam, writing and computer-based exam. The time we need to do each question is (marks x 2) - 2 = the time needed to do one question. For example, the mark is 4, so it will be 4 x 2 = 8, then 8 - 2 = 6 minutes, so we have 6 minutes to answer the question.

After a long explanation on how to do a 'describe' question, Mr Rick ask the whole class to answer the describe question he made and gave us 10 minutes to do it. There is 1 person got it all correct from Spring Team.

Week 14 Day 2

Week 14 Day 2

Today, there is no History class, because today is Good Friday. And this is the day Jesus Christ was crucified, thank you Lord.

Week 14 Day 1

Week 14 Day 1

Today, we didn't have any Ldls. But we have a video to watch. Today, Mr Rick came late to class, so he need to pay. Then Mr Rick lecture to us about "Why was Napoleon defeated?(part 1)". The lecture only have 4 slides but he explained 2 slides for a very long time, but he didn't get an infraction because of explaining too much.
We learned about the 3 types of poison: Nepotism, Corruption, and Collusion. After that, we have two videos to watch.

Week 13 Day 2

Week 13 Day 2

Today, we don't have any team teaching. Mr Rick didn't get late going to class. As usual, he checked who will be teaching. The class starts with the lecture of "Napoleon, first European"
It was stated that by 1810, Napoleon made France the most important country all over Europe.
After the lecture is finished, we don't do Ldls but instead we will have some research. Mr Rick showed us a lot of maps.
This are the pictures of map.

We also have some questions to answer, and we need to answer it as a team so we did this questions in google docs.

Week 13 Day 1

Week 13 Day 1

Today, we have another teaching for our first teacher. Mr Rick comes to class on time. Before the class starts, we have an activity to do. Then after the activity, Mr Rick lecture us about "Did Napoleon betray the Revolution?".
Mr said that when all the things are destroyed during the revolution, Napoleon fix all that. It seems that he was a good leader. Then Mr move on about 3 types of leadership, which is Autocratic leadership, democratic leadership, and Laissez-faire. Napoleon chose to be an Autocratic leadership which is very bad. Autocratic leadership is that the leader/boss is the only one that gives out ideas and treat other members are like minions.

After the lecture is done, there's no more Ldls! For the year!

Week 12 Day 2

Week 12 Day 2

Today, we have another teaching. Mr Rick did a good job at not coming late to class. As usual, Mr Rick checked who will teach for today, and Chris in our team will teach.
As the class starts, Mr Rick lecture us about "Did Napoleon betray the Revolution?"
We learned that Napoleon was a smart guy. When he was crowned as king, he ruled for 15 years, more than other kings. Then Mr Rick remind us about the left and right wings, which is the Jacobins.
After that, there are team teaching. The first teacher who will be teaching is Chris. The topic is about "Did Napoleon betray the Revolution?". After the team teaching is done, Mr Rick ask us to do a research. What we need to research is about the Government, Individual Rights, Education, The Church, and Social Classes. Even we only have four people in a group, we did all the research.
When we are researching, Mr Rick said we need to 'Ditch the Book', which means we shouldn't use the textbook too much when researching. We are done with the work so we didn't have it for homework.

Week 12 Day 1

Week 12 Day 1

Today, we have normal teachings and first day of History class in this term!;D And as usual again, Mr Rick is late. -_-"
As usual, we do book checks. Then the treasurer (Iva) remind Mr Rick to pay the Rp 5000 from the IOU, so he pays for this and again got another IOU for being late.
Today, Mr Rick is going to lecture us about "Coup d'état". After a long talk about "Coup d'état", we reach the topic about Napoleon's wife, who is called Joséphine de Beauhamais. Then we talked about the first prime minister of Singapore.
We learned that after the terror end in 1794, Jacobins and their supporter (San-culottes) were taken out their power. After he explain other things, he told us to do a research of our two president, which is Soekarno and Suharto.
Then as usual, Mr Rick said: Teach! And we said: Okay! Natasha is teaching for today.

Week 11 Day 2

Week 11 Day 2

Today, as usual, we are doing Ldls and normal teaching time. And again, Mr Rick was late again. Then we do another inspection of book check, shirt check, and others. After that, Mr Rick teaches the whole class about "Why did the French support the revolution?" It is all about two people, Jean Paul Marat and Charlotte Corday, and they both have relations to the French Revolution. Jean Paul Marat was hiding from people by going to the sewers, but not long after, he got a disease called Prurigo, which can only be healed by antiseptics.
After that, its time for teaching.  Then the team teachers began to teach each other the topic, and in our group, we have Jasmine as our teacher for today. Then after 15 minutes, the teaching time is done.

Term Break

TERM BREAK! No school, no History lesson for a whole one week.
HAPPY TERM BREAK :D

Week 10 Day 2

Week 10 Day 2

Today, we are going to face the test, but before the test begins, Mr Rick tell us a trick on how to solve the test questions. Then we begin the test.......
After we are done doing the test, Mr Rick told us the scores, and there are 4 people get high scores. After that, Mr Rick ask us to play a game which is called Battlefield Academy.

Week 10 Day 1

Week 10 Day 1

Today, we were supposed to have a test, but we actually didn't have the test and almost everyone felt relieved. We have "le revision"/ revision according to Mr Rick. We start with Mr Rick telling us the study points in form of question such as:
1. Why was Mary executed? When and where?
2. When was the Declaration rights of man drawn up?
.....etc.....
Then we have a fun activity, which we will need to make a circle and we will whisper to each other the answer. The first message was "Robespierre quickly get his head chopped off." But when the message reached the end, the message become "Robespierre got him cut off." It changed a lot.
After we are done with this activity, Mr Rick showed us a video, it was funny but old fashion.

Week 9 Day 2

Week 9 Day 2

Today, we have free time in History class, or we can say Tech Time.
Today Mr Rick was late by minutes, but not really that long. We still gave him an infraction, so he needs to pay. After he came to class, he just remembered that he doesn't have money in pocket and that all his money is all with her wife. So he got an IOU from treasurer.
Then he ask the whole class if we are done with the assignments in schoology. And if we haven't, he asked us to finish those "0" scores into a better score. ThenMr Rick tell us the questions that we made in the first class. After he is done talking, he ask us to review the questions. Mr Rick allow us to have the free time (tech time) while we try to answer the questions.

Week 9 Day 1

Week 9 Day 1

Today, we have learned about three topics in one day. Mr Rick didn't come late so he didn't pay. For the lecturing, Mr Rick told us that  there's three topics to learn about, 2 topics will be taught by Mr Rick and 1 topic will be thought by Joanne from Team Delta.
After Joanne is done teaching the class, she get back to her seat quietly. After that, Mr Rick teach the whole class about "Why did the French execute their king?".

After that, Mr Rick let us make our own test questions. The question we make is:
When did the Declaration Rights of Man happen?

But *woops* We forgot what was the answer. *sorry*

Mr Rick then say that he is going to put some of the questions in the test. After this, Mr Rick talk to us about the 7 deadly sins. The seven deadly sins are the wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. Mr Rick told us that the seven deadly sins are sins that are not really nice to have in our life, so we need to avoid it.

Week 8 Day 2

Week 8 Day 2

Today, we have three teachers teaching. This time teachers could teach for 8 minutes only. As usual, Mr Rick assign someone to be the timekeeper. Jasmine teach as the first teacher, then Natasha teach on the next topic. After that is Chris turn. There are lots of discussion. Then the teachings are done.

Week 8 Day 1

Week 8 Day 1

Today, we have an IT based test. And at that day, almost all of us are freaked out , but we still study a little. Mr Rick is not late and he got confident and let us do the test. After we done the test, we found out that the highest grade is 72%, but we don't know who it was. Then he turned the test off, so that no one can be able to do the test again. When there is still 30 minutes left, Mr Rick told us to do anything in schoology and complete all uncompleted assignments.

Week 7 Day 2

Week 7 Day 2

Today, there is only one team who will present, and that is the Alpha team, and also Aaron from Echo team because last time he was absent. But Mr Rick got late in History class, so he need to pay Rp 5000 to the pizza box. When Mr Rick went out of the class, we did a book check, but 2 people got an infraction for not bringing the book, so they get to pay.
When Mr Rick came back, he began to talk about the word "aduh". He said it was a word for people who will get married, and they said "aduh". This makes the whole class burst out laughter.
Before Alpha team present, one of the member of team Charlie is asked to past papers to grade. Then the time has come for the other team need to present. When team Alpha present, two people got bonus points, which is Jennifer and Anthea. After they finished presenting, its Aaron's turn to present. Mr Rick noticed that his grammar was so nice, but he knew that Aaron was copy pasting stuffs, so he get a 0%.
Mr Mak, our Worldview teacher, came into our class and make funny faces. He also think that Aaron's presentation was copy pasted so he take his laptop and leave. Then he talks about Albert Einstein.

Week 7 Day 1

Week 7 Day 1

Today is the same like last week. There is still team presentation. There is one team who present, the Charlie team...and yes, that's our group. When Mr Rick wants to start the 2nd team, the computer broke down, so there will be only one team presenting.
Now the presentation starts...
After the presentation is finished, Mr Rick started to ask questions to our team.
When the computer broke down, Mr Mak fix it for Mr Rick. When the computer was fixing, we still have 5 minutes left, but we were allowed to dismissed the class.

Week 6 Day 2

Week 6 Day 2

Today, there's still team presentation going on as continuation from the class 1 in this week. Last time, there is only one team present. But now, there are two teams present, Echo and Bravo team. Today, there is an infraction. The infraction is caused by Mr Rick, he came late to class for five minutes or more. So he payed Rp 5000 to the pizza box.
As usual, Mr Rick talk a bit about the presentation then he ask for a student to be the timekeeper, then one of member of Spring team volunteered.
Then the presentations begin. The first team is the Echo team, which has four members: Aurelia, Marco, Deandrew, and Aaron. But this time Aaron didn't come to school because he is sick. So Aaron will present next week.
Then the next team, Bravo team, will present, which consist of 4 people: Karen, Andre, Jaden, and Kimberly. After each person has done teaching, every team grades on them.

There are still 2 other groups that haven't present yet, which is Team Charlie and Team Alpha, so they will present it next week. Then Mr Rick ask us to discuss for the next presentation, but he instead ended up singing with his guitar...

Week 6 Day 1

Week 6 Day 1

Today is not like other days. Today we have team presentations. Mr Rick expects us to have two groups present today, but only one group present today. Mr Rick told us to get random numbers on the paper, and our group got number 4.Then, Mr Rick gave us a paper for grading the team that present.
The people of the first team to present is the Delta team, there are Gaby, Joanne, Iva, and jason.

Week 5 Day 2

Week 5 Day 2

Today we should be presenting our team presentations, but Mr Rick had E.coli so he had to go to the doctor. Mr. Mak than replaces him and asked us to prepare for our presentations.

This is our opening slide:

Week 5 Day 1

Week 5 Day 1

Today we should have 3 teachers teaching, but only 1 did because there's not enough time. Our topic for today is did the revolution make France a fairer country. There we talked about the Declaration of the Rights of Man. We also talked about the Bill of Rights. It has a few lists of things like:

  • Everyone is equal
  • We are different in economics but same in personality
  • No one have authority
  • Of the people and by the people
  • Law shall provide punishment
And many more! Then we have teaching

Week 4 Day 2

Week 4 Day 2

Today we don't have History class because of Chinese New Year Holiday. Happy Chinese New Year!

Week 4 Day 1

Week 4 Day 1

Today we don't have team teaching because we have more other things to do. We discussed about some questions, with the method Mr Rick told us during the first semester. Today no one got an infraction. Mr Rick showed us two videos. The whole class really pay attention to the videos.

After we finished watching both of the videos, Mr Rick lecture us about the "Changes in France". There are many discussions we made in class. When Mr Rick tell us about the "Changes in France", he said that there are a lot of changes in France. We learned that people in France are asked to pay their taxes, but only the third estates pay the taxes. The first and second estates payed a little, so the third estates got mad. The third estates are the middle classes and peasants, they are not noble nor royalty and not really rich, but they payed the most. The third estates don't want to pay the taxes. Then we learned that there are other people who don't have money to pay the feudal dues which is 50% of their wages. The second problem is that the third estates are just relaxing and enjoy their lives because they have many money and they don't have to pay the taxes.

After his lecture is done, Mr Rick gave us papers and he said that we are going to do something with it. Mr ask us to write the question he said later, and change it into a 'describe' question. Mr. Rick's question is "Why did the French Revolution started?", then we write "Describe the reason why the French Revolution started." Then he ask us to change it into a 'explain' question, then we write "Explain why does the French Revolution start." And we got both of them correct. Then he told us to draw a circle and right the answers in six branches. Mr Rick asked us to do a research on it so we have more concepts about it.

After we are done, Mr Rick ask us to choose two of the best answers that are related to each other. But we are not done with it so we did it as homework.

Week 3 Day 2

Week 3 Day 2

Today's topic is about "What was life like before the French Revolution?(part 2)" This is the 2nd time we learned about this topic. Mr Rick divides this topic into 2 parts (Natasha teaching the 1st and Christopher teaching the 2nd), and today he is lecturing us the second part. Firstly, Mr Rick tell us a recap of the last topic, which is about the three estates.
When Mr Rick was lecturing, the whole class take notes on what he said. Since today he didn't lecture much to us, he gave us a video to watch. The whole class watched the video, and many of them attentively listen to what the people in the screen is talking about, even though they talk really fast.
After we finished watching the video, Mr Rick teach us a lot more about the French Revolution. Then he realized about an infraction in the class, and decided to have some rules in this class. We have an agreement in History class that if we do an infraction, we need to pay Rp 2000 and collect it in the pizza box. He told us that when the money in the box is quite many, we could have a PIZZA PARTY! :)
3 boys in our class who sat in the back got an infraction, so they need to pay Rp 2000 to the pizza box.
The infractions that is common in our class is like interrupting when someone is talking, coming late to class, forgot to bring stationary or books, for girls: those who don't tie their hair back, and for boys: those who don't tuck in their undershirt.
After this, we have the teachings. Today's topic "What was life like before the Revolution(part 2)" was teach by Christopher.

Week 3 Day 1

Week 3 Day 1

Today, we discussed about one topic, it is about "What was life like during the French revolution?". We missed the teaching last week on Week 2 Day 1, so we need to do two teachings today. The teachers that teach today was Jasmine, for the 2nd topic "Was FRance well governed before the revolution" and Natasha teaches the topic for today "What was life like before the revolution?(part 1)". During the topic "Was France well governed during the French Revolution?", we learned all about the king, the first estate, then the second estate, and the third estate.

Week 2 Day 2

Week 2 Day 2

We discussed 2 topics today, but only 1 teacher in the group teach, and it is the teacher from Week 2 Day 1, and we don't have the Week 2 Day 2 teacher teaching, so today's teacher will teach next week. We discussed about both "How was the French revolution been remembered" and "Was France well governed before the Revolution". We learned that Louis XVI married to Marie Antoinette, and they both rule France.

There is no one who teach the "Was France well governed before the Revolution", but the one who teach "How was French revolution been remembered" was the first teacher, Justin.

We were told that the Ldl scorecard was in Schoology, which was used to score the students that teach the lesson by the scribe. Mr Rick said that when the teacher is teaching, other group members need to write notes on what the teacher is presenting. We need to type notes when Mr Rick is lecturing too, but he said that we need to improve at typing faster so that we wouldn't get left behind.

Week 2 Day 1

Week 2 Day 1

We have holiday this day, so we don't have any History lesson. But the History course for today will be postpone to Friday this week, so we need to learn about two topics on Friday.

Semester Reflection

Well.....For this past semester we must admit it was very challenging for all of the member in Huracan team. Of course we all have out ups and downs but we still worked together pretty well. In this history class, we are being taught to be independent and not to always rely to the teacher to tell us what to do since we are not the soccer ball anymore now. the most challenging task in History is the portfolios like this blog. We help each other in tasks. We would sometimes exchange notes to study for the upcoming tests. We've improve a lot in our group. and i hope that at the next academic year we will do better than we did now.

According to us, there are lots of difficult challenges in History. The hardest thing to do in History is the portfolio (The blog). The portfolio requires lots of time and it also covers lots of things. The portfolio requires a very good team work and this will record everything we've been through. In addition, we also have the semester exam, we really need to study for that and we solve them using the power of research. There are lots of pages because we did research from everywhere.

The Huracan team has progressed on being a teacher. It means that we were on the stage of applying and analyzing on level 2 of Bloom’s pyramid. We also learnt the lives of Marie Antoinette, the royal escape, Louis XVI, Robespierre, Napoleon Bonaparte and more things about France. There are so many topics for us to study. So we did our homework on researching every day. This makes us to prepare for the exam earlier. Mr. Rick gave us some study questions to research on. We have 2 types of exams, the extremely hard exams, which is called the HOTS (higher order thinking skills) exam and extremely easy exam called the LOTS (lower order thinking skills) exam, which is simply memorizing stuff!

Our Improvements

Throughout the year we improved a lot since the first day we started the class. We were so confused on what are we supposed to do especially when we heard that we were going to teach our classmates and doing the things our own. At first our members are still reading from the powerpoint but now we can explain more deeper and now we understand the topic without needing to read the powerpoint which is a very good thing. We do our Ldls daily and turning in every assignments on time and checking each other for any infractions and so much more. The most important thing is that our learning skills grew.

Our team has improved a lot in our initiative, because we become more motivated day by day. We also become more self-discipline as we try to do all our work without the teacher reminding us. We are also more organised than before. We work better together, especially making this blog. Our leadership, especially the scribe, is also increasing or getting better. Our knowledge o f History grows due to research, but we improve in one thing that History offered us, critical thinking.

Week 1 Day 1 and 2

Week 1 Day 1 and 2

This is the first week of school, and we didn't study at all, but Mr Rick discuss about being a player instead of being a soccer ball. He said if we are soccer balls, we need to be kicked, or else we won't move, which means that we need to be pushed by the teacher when doing the work, but if we are a player, we will just kick the ball, and we can move on our own, which means that we are independent and more discipline.

Since its the first week of school, Mr Rick doesn't ask us to teach about anything. Then he got us into teams of four or five, which consists of groups from Alpha-Golf. In our class, there are only 5 groups, which is Team Alpha-Echo, because there are 21 people and only Team Alpha got 5 people in a group. Our team is Charlie, and our team name is Huracan.

Summary Reflections of Each Topic

1. How has French Revolution been remembered? part 1

On July 1989, France celebrated it's 200th anniversary of the "Taking of the Bastille", one of the most important parts of the French Revolution. The revolution brought sudden and drastic change to the country, much like the civil war did in Britain, and with a quite similar outcome. A traditional view sees the aristocrats murdered by the bloodthirsty French people on the guillotine. A French doctor named Joseph-Ignace Guillotin proposed to create a machine to help execute those condemned to death quickly, painlessly and with dignity. He hired a German Harpsicord maker named Tobias Schmidt to design and make the first prototype. The first to die using a guillotine was a convicted thief and rapist on the 25th of April 1792, names Nicholas Jacques Pelletier. On 14 July, 1789, the people of Paris stormed the Bastille. An old French prison with a sinister reputation, it had been slated for demolition and was temporarily storing munitions and gunpowder. By 1789, it held only 7 prisoners and was being phased out.
2. Was France well governed before the Revolution part 1

The “ANCIEN REGIME” means “The old regime”. This is the name used to describe France before the revolution. France was ruled by a total monarchy, like Britain before its civil war. The King had total power. He was seen as “God’s Representative” and called “His Most Christian Majesty”.

In 1774, Louis XVI inherited the French throne when his father died (Louis XV). He loved hunting, loved his family, wasn’t very interested in politics. Louis had married an Austrian princess named Marie Antoinette when he was 15. She was young and beautiful, but soon became a source of gossip which hurt the image of the king. In 1781, a book was published called “A Historical Essay on the Life of Marie Antoinette” and was reprinted every year until 1793. The government tried to suppress it as it helped spread the rumors:
– Marie had many lovers.
– She wasted money ( bought a necklace worth 1.6 million livres)
– She interfered in the running of the country
In fact there was no evidence that she had any lovers. It was found that the necklace was a plot to discredit her, and the amount of money actually given to her was tiny.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
– To try and keep control of the growing country, Louis had divided the country into 30 districts called “Intendants”.
– Each of these districts were controlled by a leader, and they had enormous political power.
– For other issues, like tax collection and church management, the country was divided up differently.
– This made running the country confusing and difficult.
LAW AND ORDER
– The King enforced a harsh system of law and order.
THE ESTATES
– By 1789, France still had some aspects of the old “Feudal System” (refer to notes from Semester 1).
– Nobles had great power over the peasants, peasants had to give nobles their “dues” in money or goods.
– They may also have to work for the lord, especially at harvest time.
– The lord’s animals could wander into the peasant’s lands damaging their crops.
– There were 3 Groups called “ESTATES”. Each estate had its own privileges, and each estate served the King in some way.

3. What was life like before the Revolution part 1 and 2

There are issues in life before revolution. The issues the 1st estate have is that the major bishop were very wealthy and parish priest very poor. The issues that 2nd estates have is that the major nobles were very rich, other very poor. the issues that 3rd estates have is that some of the peasants were wealthy and others peasant, urban workers were growing in numbers, then a middle class was emerging rapidly and growing in wealth, and the landless laborers live off their labor and growing in numbers. The first estates consisted of the roman Catholic Clergy. The second estates consists of the Nobles about 2% of the population and own 20% of the land. The third estates' bourgeoisie had little rights and paid half of their income in taxes than city workers and peasants.

4. Changes in France

Major events in history normally do not occur for any one reason in particular, but instead are a culmination of many things that have occurred over time that have built up enough "pressure" for something to happen. In the 1770's and 1780's, another issue added to the already highly-stressed situation. During the course of the 18th century, an economic change was taking place that caused an inflation with in the country. Peasants found it hard to buy the basics like bread or milk. From the 1730's to 1789, the cost of living rose 45%, but wages rose only 22%. The population rose from 19 million (1715) to 26 million (1789), it is a 37% increase. The emerging middle classes was becoming wealthier and wanted more political power in government. The 3rd estates were paying the taxes while 1st and 2nd estates were not paying any.

5. Did the revolution make France a fairer country?

The National assembly was formed to have representative from the 3 estates. it wanted to make great changes in France. They drew up "Declaration of the rights of man" in August 1789. The declaration of the rights of man stated that men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Law is the expression of the general will. Every citizen has a right to participate personally or through representative. All citizen being equal in the eyes of the law, are equally eligible to all dignities and to all public positions and occupations, according to their abilities, and without distinction except that of their virtues and talents. No person shall be accused, arrested, or imprisoned except in some cases.

6. What should be done with the King?

In 1788, Louis was prepared to try reform and was hailed as a hero when he called the Estates General. When many of its members formed the National Assembly in June 1789, he had no choice but to go along with it. The revolutionary leaders wanted to share power with him. Then the royal family escapes and runs. He tried to get to Montmedy, a town on the border which is 300 km from paris and 2 km from Austria. The plan was to get  help from Austrian troops to help restore him to full power.

7. What should be done with the king II?

Once the king was brought back to Paris, the National Assembly decided to keep him on as the Constitutional monarch. On 3 September 1791, the constitution was proclaimed and Louis took an oath of loyalty to it. On 30 September, the national assembly declared its work finished. Austria, and absolute monarchy shared a border with France. The king was Marie Antoinette's brother. Austria was protecting nobles who fled the revolution and plotting to restore the monarchy. On 20 April 1792, France declared war on Austria. Not everyone agreed on the war with Austria. 2/3 of the nobles who were officers of the army had left the country, the army wasn't doing well. Then the economy is getting worse. People blamed Louis and felt he wanted France to lose, siding with Austria to restore the monarchy. The people stormed the Tuileries, arrested the king on August 10. By 21 September, the National Assembly declared France a 'Replubic'. The war with Austria got worse. Paris was open to the enemy. Between 1100 and 1400 clerics and nobles who had supported the King were jailed at the end of August, and then murdered. These were known as the September Massacres.

8. Why did the French execute their King?

People had taken down the king and declared a republic. in Louis' trial, he could have lawyers, but not call witnesses. The case was heard by the Convention itself, not judges. Louis faced 33 charges including bankrupting the nation, plotting against the revolution, trying to flee, and accepting a constitution he despised. On the day of execution (20 January 1793), he have an afternoon with a priest/confessor Edgeworth. At 1:00 pm, he is allowed to see his family for the first time since the death sentence was passed. Then at 8:30 pm, he have a dinner with a spoon: 2 chicken wings, veggies, 2 glasses of wine, sponge cake, and Malaga wine for dessert. Then at 9:30 pm, he have a last meeting with his family. At the next dat at 10:00 am, Louis arrives at the guillotine.

9. Was the terror really necessary?

Louis' execution was the most famous of many that happened during 1793-1794. This period was known as "The Terror". Thousands of people were killed on this day. More than 12,000 people were officially guillotined. Many other were shot, drowned, or put to death in other ways. And Est. 300,000 were imprisoned.

10. Robespierre: hero or villain?

Robespierre was a leading figure of the revolution for 5 years. He has been described as both the "most hateful character in History" and the "greatest man in History. To some people he was the defender of the poor.To others he was a vicious and cruel monster who murdered thousands of innocent victims. He was born in Arras. In 1780's, he become a lawyer and defends the poor. In 1789-92, he was elected to Estates general, national assembly, national convention, Leader of Jacobins, and many others. He started the Terror to deal with crisis in France. In 28 July 1794, he was guillotined with 21 of his supporters after the crisis is done and the terror is no longer needed, and when the Convention votes for his arrest.

11. Did the french support the revolution part 1?

There are 3 types of responses about the revolution, they are those who are excited about it (revolutionaries), those who are against it (counter-revolutionaries), and those who couldn't care less one way or another. San Culottes were urban workers who supported the revolution, and had 2 main demands, which is to be allowed to vote in elections and to have fixed prices on staples like bread and salt. They are the formed groups around Paris and the ones who held meetings. The San Culottes forced deputies to protect people from food shortages and high prices.

12. Did the french support the revolution part 2?

Revolts against an oppressive Paris government under the Jacobins began sprouting up all over from many different sources. An army of 30-40,000 called the Vendean Army, made of peasants, was a serious threat until finally crushed by the Paris army, although afterwards a GUERRILLA campaign kept going for years against the Paris government. There are people who are Counter-revolutionaries, they are the nobles, clergy, middle classes, and peasants. Jean Paul Marat was known as the "friend of the people". He was a doctor and had practiced 11 years in England. In 1789, he gave up science and medicine and started a newspaper. In it, he attacked the Girondins and the nobility calling them traitors. He went into hiding in the sewers and caught a skin disease called Prurigo. In Caen, a 25 year old Charlotte Corday started attending their meetings. The priest who had given her mother her last rites had refused to pledge allegiance to the revolution and was guillotined, the first to be guillotined in Caen. She decided to strike a blow for the oppressed by killing Marat.

13. Coup d'état

After the terror ended in 1794, the Jacobins and their supporters the San Culottes were slowly out of power. No government was able to be formed by 1799, and France was in crisis. The government had high debt.French armies had been badly defeated in wars with Italy, morale was low. In Paris, left-wing (republicans) and right- wing (royalists) were unhappy with the government. In August 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte was one of France's young military leaders and currently at war with his troops in Egypt. He was called by some politicians to launch a "Coup d'état".  He was born in Corsica to a minor Corsican noble. He wins a scholarship to a elite military training college in Paris in 1784.He marries to Josephine Beauharnais in 1796. He reorganized the French Army and conquered most of Italy in 1796-1797.

14. Did napoleon betray the revolution part 1?

Napoleon ruled France for 15 years. No revolutionary government had ever lasted longer than 2 years. People were tired of political instability and welcomed a strong leader. To stay in power, Napoleon needed to fix Frances problems.

15. Did napoleon betray the revolution part 2?

Napoleon was determined that many good ideas of the revolution could be made to work properly. In the departments, he placed "deputies" by "prefects", appointed by him instead of elections. Mayors were no longer elected but appointed by him. The revolution made many new laws which existed alongside traditional ones. Napoleon set up a committee which simplified the law system. It was called the "Code Napoleon" and stands as the basis of French law today. He had people arrested that he thought were dangerous, without being charged of any crime. Over 2,500 people were imprisoned without trial for political offenses. He focused on secondary education and left primary education to the church. He was far more concerned about men than women. He didn't see education as a right of the people, but a means of training servants of the state.

16. Napoleon, the first European part 1

In 1799, France was at the point of collapse, and had been soundly beaten by their enemies. By 1810, Napoleon had made France the most important country of Europe. In 1810, Napoleon wrote to the Viceroy of Italy explaining why he must limit Italian imports to France in favor of French merchants. The continental system was the first common market. This was Napoleon's attempt to control the economy of Europe. Decrees in 1806-1808 forbid European trade with Britain or its colonies. Defeated countries were forced to supply their raw materials and resources to France and buy manufactured foods from France in return.

17. Why was Napoleon defeated part 1

By 1810, Napoleon had conquered almost all of Europe, but by 1815 France’s Empire had lost almost all of its territorial gains and Napoleon had been defeated and exiled. 21 October 1805, the British Navy under Admiral Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish Navies near Cape Trafalgar, off the coast of south-west Spain. France had been at war with Britain for a long time, and the French Navy had been beaten before under Napoleon by the British. This Battle confirmed the superiority of the British Navy and forced Napoleon to depend on land battles. He felt that as long as he remained successful on land, the British could never beat him. In the Peninsular War, Napoleon used the excuse of a quarrel with the Spanish royal family to send in his brother Joseph to take over Spain and become King, but he was never able to fully control Spain. The British sent in troops to help the resistance effort. By 1814, the French had been driven out.

18. why was napoleon defeated part 2

The Spanish used Guerilla warfare against the French, like the Americans used against the British in the American Revolution, and the North Vietnamese used against the UN forces in the Vietnam War. This is where a local population uses “hit and run” tactics instead of direct frontal fighting. This includes ambushing the enemy, stealing supplies, etc. then hiding among the people. Guerrilla Warfare is hard for an army to cope with, an army can’t usually find anyone to fight back at once they are “hit”. Over 300,000 French troops were stuck in Spain for over 6 years dealing with guerillas. Napoleon did not anticipate how difficult it would be.Guerrilla Warfare made it possible for the British army to defeat the French army, 4 times its size.

Kaizen Reflection

"Kai Zen" means a good continual improvement. Mr. Rick indulges us with the spirit of Kaizen to make us improve every time. That also means doing wrong things improves you, but only if you change. We keep on levelling up our skills without giving up. Like Thomas Alpha Edison, he did the light bulb experiment wrong lots of times, but in the end he did create a long lasting light bulb.

Using the spirit of Kaizen, we can do anything. Believing in Christ will further improve us. If you don't ask Christ to help you, you won't complete things in the best you can.

Introduction

Welcome to the blog of Huracan (Charlie team). This blog is used as our portfolio for our History subject. Before, we made it with binders but it didn't work out well as all the papers get crumpled up and things start dropping. This semester, our portfolios will be done digitally.

We need to edit this blog day by day and each member will take turns. We make sure all work given out are divided equally.

This blog is only for secondary students that go to Springfield International School, more specifically in our History course. We are divided into teams according to our past grade and work together to gain knowledge and learn to think critically.  We are the Charlie team and we named our team Huracan. Our teacher, Mr. Richard Lancaster Shanks, tasked one of use to teach each day, so we decided to do it in this order: Justin-Jasmine-Natasha-Chris. Our History class is an active classroom so it is expected that we need to be noisy, but it needs to be related to our topic.

Since this is our first year, we won't be progressing very well, but for sure we will improve. Mr. Rick is more of a facilitator than a teacher since we teach each other things. In History, we learn to think critically instead of just stuff.

This is our blog intro and thank you for visiting.
